January 20th, 2017

Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians:

Newton participated in No Name-Calling Week this past week (Jan. 17th-20th).  It was inspired by a young adult novel entitled The Misfits by James Howe.  The idea is to focus attention on the problem of name-calling in schools, and to provide students and educators with the tools and inspiration to launch an ongoing dialogue about ways to eliminate name-calling in our communities.

At Newton, we recognize the importance of building empathy and teaching respect to our students, and note the impact words can have on their well-being.  Students were introduced to many activities that will help them realize the impact that name-calling, and teach them strategies for coping with and putting an end to name-calling.  Activities included watching videos, writing poetry, role-playing scenarios, etc.  We encourage families to join us in our effort to educate  by initiating conversations about language and empathy with their children.  Our hope is that No Name-Calling week will help all students consider the weight of the words they use and make school a safer, healthier place for all of our children.

It is again the time of the year that we need to begin thinking about the end of the year. Our annual fun run/walk. Run with the Knights will be held this year on Tuesday, May 23rd. We are in need of volunteers to help set up, clean be course marshals to help supervise the students. We also need people to donate gift cards as prizes. Please access the link below if you are willing to help.

Enjoy your weekend.
