Dear Parents/Guardians:

We’ve had a great first day of school. I spent most of my morning with the sixth graders and they seem to be adjusting very well. It is always exciting to have the sixth graders begin with us and watch them grow throughout the year.

As always we have a few bumps in the road to begin the school year. As part of the bond we received new serving lines in the kitchen over the summer. Students will be served their lunches in place of the old grab and go routine. As any new system is implemented it takes time to iron out the wrinkles. It did take longer to get the students through the lunch lines today. I am hoping that this straightens itself out in the next week or so. We will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed.

We have several new staff members this year, they are listed below along with the position they will be holding:
  • Amy Rahne:   Assistant Princpal, will supervise the sixth grade
  • April Amonson:  Speech Pathologist
  • Greg Terry:  seventh and eighth grade math
  • Renee Hemmie:  seventh grade social studies for first semester
We want to welcome our new staff members to Newton Middle School. We are excited to have them on board this year.

I want to remind everyone regarding our schedule change polices. We only make changes to schedules if there is a mistake in the schedule or we need to make some modifications within a student’s elective schedule. We do not make schedule changes due to parents requesting specific teachers, students wanting to be with friends etc.

We had a phenomenal year last year with our test scores and we will be working to get that information on our website. Our growth in math was among the highest ranking in the state and our reading and writing scores also went up again. We are again ranked by the Colorado Department of Education as Exceeds expectations in math and Meets Expectations in reading and writing.

I hope all of our students had a great first day back to school and we look forward to the rest of the school year.

Have a great weekend.
Respectfully,
James O’Tremba
Newton Middle School
