An Incident to share info about from Tuesday.

On Tuesday, we had an incident that occurred after school  involving individuals from Gideon’s International. Each year, members of this organization stand on public sidewalks near many secondary schools in the area, including Newton Middle School, and offer students copies of the Bible. This activity is not affiliated with Newton Middle School or Littleton Public Schools. Again, this is not allowed on Newton Middle School grounds.  Sometimes we receive prior notice of their arrival; however, most often, they show up unannounced, and we become aware as students are being dismissed.

This year, however, two individuals were found in areas on our campus where they are not permitted. When I was informed that someone was near our bus loop, I responded immediately and asked him to leave school grounds. He complied and moved to the public sidewalk along Colorado Boulevard. Shortly after, a parent alerted me to another man distributing bibles on the sidewalk along Arapahoe Road near our Athletic Entrance. As I approached him, he moved toward the Albion entrance to our parking lot, where I encountered two additional individuals attempting to give out bibles. I engaged them in a brief but firm conversation regarding appropriate boundaries, and they chose to pack up their belongings and leave.

Over the past 48 hours, I have worked closely with our district administration, district security, School Resource Officer, and have reached out to Gideon’s International to address this situation directly and ensure expectations are clearly understood moving forward.  They sent two representatives from their organization today to meet with me and apologized repeatedly for not following their organization's guidelines.

I also want to take this opportunity to encourage conversations at home. This is a good moment to talk with your student about how to respond in these types of situations—whether to engage or politely decline—depending on your family’s values. Some students may feel uncomfortable saying "no," and it's helpful for them to know that it’s okay to do so respectfully. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
